Question:
Is it ok to use Bilevel devices as ventilators or should we use CPAP devices if a ventilator is not available?
Answer:
As many professionals may know and have experienced, the COVID-19 pandemic created an overwhelming need for ventilators. During CY 2020/2021 experts saw a variety of devices created or repurposed in order to support the medical needs of patients. Understand that CPAP devices do not provide ventilation, however, bilevel devices are ventilators. Bilevel devices can be used for invasive ventilation. Documentation in the medical record must clearly reference the use of a Bilevel device for invasive mechanical ventilation. Note that any modifications to the Bilevel device must be documented. Settings for the Bilevel device should also be documented. The same principles apply to bilevel ventilators for invasive ventilation as for ICU ventilators.
