Radiology Question for the Week of April 24, 2017

Question:

What CPT code would you recommend for an ultrasound of the temporal artery for giant-cell arteritis?

Answer:

Unless you are doing a duplex scan, the code would be 76536—ultrasound, soft tissues of head and neck (e.g., thyroid, parathyroid, parotid), real time with image documentation. If you are doing a duplex scan (grayscale imaging of the artery plus color Doppler and spectral analysis), then the code would be 93882 (duplex scan of extracranial arteries; unilateral or limited study).
