Question:

When should code 61624 be reported instead of 61635 for aneurysm treatment?

Answer:

Code 61624 is used to report embolization of an aneurysm, pseudoaneurysm, or vascular extravasation and includes all intra-aneurysmal or endoluminal devices (e.g., balloons, stents, guide catheters, etc). Therefore, when embolization is the primary surgical goal, 61624 is reported and not the intracranial stent code. However, if a stent is deployed as the sole management of an aneurysm, pseudoaneurysm, or vascular extravasation, the stent deployment code (61635) should be reported and not the embolization code.
