SPECIAL GUEST
Jill Holland,
Mayor,
City of McKenzie, Tenn.

ALSO FEATURING
Janelle Ali-Dinar, PhD; Nancy Beckley, MS, MBA, CHC; David Glaser, Esq.;
Ronald Hirsch, MD, FACP, CHCQM; and Kevin R. Miserez, Esq.

Jill Holland, the mayor of the rural town of McKenzie, Tenn., population 5,300, is seeking the help of U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) in an unfolding drama pitting the town’s most high-profile physician against Medicare.

The stakes are high, as previously reported here on Monitor Mondays. The loss of Bryan Merrick, MD, 65, who has had his Medicare billing privileges yanked by Medicare over a billing dispute, threatens a loss of jobs and closure of a medical center that serves a largely rural and elderly population dependent on its services.

Merrick, the town’s only internist and the only one who can read an echocardiogram, has been practicing medicine for more than three decades. Mayor Holland will be the special guest on the next edition of Monitor Mondays, providing an update on her request to have Sen. Alexander, chairman of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, hold a subcommittee hearing to consider the revocation of Merrick’s billing privileges.

The broadcast rundown also will include:

  • Case in Point: Healthcare attorney Kevin Miserez, Esq., an associate in the law offices of Wachler & Associates, will be on the broadcast to discuss his experiences with revocations, a topic he regularly handles.
  • Monday Rounds: Ronald Hirsch, MD, vice president of R1 Physician Advisory Services, will resume his Monday Rounds with another installment of his popular segment.
  • Hot Topics: Monitor Mondays senior correspondent Nancy Beckley, president and CEO for Nancy Beckley and Associates, will have all the latest hot topics and the Monitor Mondays Listener Survey.
  • America’s Rural Health Report: Topic authority Janelle Ali-Dinar, vice president of rural health for MyGenetx, will return to report on saving healthcare for rural populations.
  • Risky Business: Healthcare attorney David Glaser with Fredrikson & Byron will have another example of a potentially troublesome issue that could pose a risk to your facility.

PROGRAM NOTE: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) wants you to know what issues they’re looking at. The bad news: if during an investigation, they ask if you saw the plan and you say “yes,” that signals that you knew better. Say “no,” and they’ll likely say you acted recklessly. The Bottom line: you need to know what’s on their mind. And now you will, thanks to the upcoming OIG Work Plan Update webcast by healthcare attorney David Glaser coming your way on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m. ET. Register now.
