Question:
What is the appropriate CPT® code for a repeat HPV screening test performed on a woman with a positive result for high-risk HPV types, aimed at monitoring for persistent infection or cell changes?
Answer:
If a woman is found to have a positive HPV screening test that detects presence of high-risk HPV types (87624 or G0476), the doctor will usually have her return in a year for repeat screening to see if the HPV infection persists and whether any cell changes have developed that need further follow-up testing. Alternatively, the woman may have another HPV test that looks specifically for HPV-16 and HPV-18 (87625), the two HPV types that cause most cervical cancers.
