Question:
What do left heart congenital catheterization codes (93595, 93596, 93597) include?
Answer:
Left heart congenital catheterization codes (93595, 93596, 93597) include among other things, catheter placement in a left-sided (systemic) cardiac chamber(s) (ventricle or atrium). In congenital heart disease, the systemic chambers may include a morphologic right atrium or morphologic right ventricle which is connected to the aorta due to transposition or other congenital anomaly. These may be termed subaortic chambers. For coding purposes, the term left ventricle or left atrium is meant to describe the systemic (subaortic) ventricle or atrium. When left heart catheterization is performed using either transapical puncture of the left ventricle or transseptal puncture of an intact septum, report 93462 in conjunction with 93595, 93596, 93597.
