Question:

Regarding endovascular repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (formerly EVAR), what is meant by ‘rupture’?

Answer:

Codes for endograft placement in the abdominal aorta are separated by ‘for rupture’ and ‘for other than rupture’, per the CPT® manual, rupture is defined as “clinical and/or radiographic evidence of acute hemorrhage”. Generally, these procedures are going to be performed emergently and not selectively. If a patient has a chronic, contained rupture this would be reported with an ‘other than rupture’ code depending on the anatomic location treated with an endograft.
