CDC Publishes Agenda for Upcoming C&M Meeting

Coordination and Maintenance meeting scheduled for March 8 and 9.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published their tentative agenda on their website for the next upcoming Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting, which is scheduled for March 8 and 9. This meeting will be held virtually.

The CDC’s tentative agenda includes:
• Coma;
• Craniosynostosis;
• Extraocular muscle entrapment;
• Foreign body sensation;
• Impairing emotional outbursts;
• Insulin-resistant syndrome;
• Leukodystrophies; and
• Observation and evaluation of newborn for other specified suspected condition ruled out.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has not posted their tentative agenda for the March meeting at the time of this report.

The meeting sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. The meeting typically begins with the presentation of the procedure topics, which is followed by the diagnosis topics. CMS will lead the discussion on the procedure topics, while the CDC takes the lead for the diagnosis proposals. Attendees are encouraged to provide feedback to each of the presentations. The public also has an opportunity to provide written feedback after the meeting. The diagnosis feedback should be emailed to nchsicd10cm@cdc.gov, and the procedure feedback is directed to ICDProcedureCodeRequest@cms.hhs.gov.

The March meeting will also provide an overview of the new procedure request process that is scheduled to be adopted by CMS. The new system will be more electronic and was discussed in the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) FY 2022 Final Rule.

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) will grant continuing education credits for each hour of attendance at the meeting. An attendee can register for the meeting to obtain credits. There will be more information available at the meeting regarding continuing education. There is no charge for attending the meeting.

The New Technology Add-On Payment (NTAP) meeting was held Dec. 14-15, 2021. This meeting provides insight into the Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting, as the NTAP items require an ICD-10-PCS code to be eligible for NTAP. There were 16 items on the December agenda. The information that was presented will be included in the IPPS Proposed Rule for FY 2023, which will be released in the April-May time frame. The recording and the agenda are posted on the CMS website and are available for viewing. The recording has a passcode, which is listed on the website.

The Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting provides an opportunity for coding professionals to impact the ICD-10-CM/PCS code development process. The oral and written comments are reviewed and considered when finalizing the code proposals. It is important to remember that the Coordination and Maintenance Committee does not discuss reimbursement. This meeting is strictly about the development of the ICD-10 classification.
