Question:

Can we bill for a temporary pacemaker (33210) and permanent pacemaker (33208) performed on the same day but at different sessions if modified appropriately?

Answer:

If these procedures were done at different sessions for medically necessary reasons, then the hospital could add modifier -59 and bill both of the following codes:

33210 Insertion or replacement of temporary transvenous single chamber cardiac electrode or pacemaker catheter (separate procedure)
33208 Insertion of new or replacement of permanent pacemaker with transvenous electrode(s); atrial and ventricular

Documentation would have to be clear as to the reason why they were done at separate sessions.
