Nearly 20 hours after an assailant fatally shot Brian Thompson, chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare (UHC), the manhunt continues for what witnesses described as a man riding a bike as he fled the New York City hotel where the healthcare insurance company was planning to conduct an investor’s conference.
Late today, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) released two sets of photos of the suspect and offered a $10,000 reward for information related the homicide. The photos are currently visible on the Department’s social media pages.
UnitedHealthcare, the insurance arm of UnitedHealth Group, headquartered in a suburb of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, is commonly described as the single largest health insurer in America, covering more than 50 million beneficiaries and claiming more than 15 percent of the total market share. Its annual revenues reportedly approached $375 billion last year.
“We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare,” the company said in a social-media post. “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
“This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota,” added Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. “Minnesota is sending our prayers for Brian’s family and the UnitedHealthcare team.”
More details will be shared as they become available.
