Question:

We are performing liver elastography exams. The ultrasound coordinator states that the appropriate CPT code for what we are performing is 76981. However, the radiologist states that we are performing shear wave measurements and that the code should be 91200. What is the difference?

Answer:

The difference between 76981–76983 and 91200 is that the 7698x codes include imaging and 91200 is non-imaging. Either can include shear wave measurements.
