How is IABP performed?
Prior to placing, the physician assesses both the iliofemoral arteries and the aorta for signs of disease. To aid the placement and advancement of the IABP, iliofemoral imaging and aortography may be done. An IABP sheath is typically inserted in the femoral artery. The IABP assembly is inserted through the sheath. The marker tip of the IABP catheter is advanced to 1 to 2 cm below the top of the arch of the aorta. The guide wire used to advance the device is removed. A catheter is flushed and connected to a pressure transducer. Fluoroscopy is used to verify and confirm correct placement. Once the device is completely and correctly placed, the IABP tubing is connected to the IABP console. Counterpulsation is now begun.
