Question:

I can’t find a specific rule, but I thought that we could code and bill for the insertion of a temporary pacemaker but should not code or bill for the removal of the temporary device. Is this correct?

Answer:

You cannot report either. If the procedure defined by code 33210 (insertion or replacement of temporary transvenous single chamber cardiac electrode or pacemaker catheter [separate procedure]) is performed with ANY other procedure at the same encounter, it cannot be billed. It is designated as a separate procedure and considered to be inclusive of other services of this type at the same time.
