Question:

What factors should be documented when determining whether an antineoplastic agent is being administered for cancer or another cause?

Answer:

When the diagnosis is in question for determining whether the antineoplasticn agent is being administered for cancer or other cause, make note of the drug, dose administered, and frequency of treatment for recurring patients. Dosage and frequency of administration is typically lower and less frequent for non-cancer diagnosis. However, before making a final determination, always confirm the diagnosis or reason for therapy with the ordering physician and request written documentation to support the ICD diagnosis code assigned.
