I believe in giving credit where credit is due – and in this case, CMS and HHS got it right.
I think they deserve a pat on the back and the thanks of the entire healthcare community and country. The reason I say so is that what is most impressive and encouraging about their choice, to me, is not just that they got it right, but how.
In the puzzle palaces’ world of political intrigue and influence, and especially during an election year, most of us probably feared or even resigned ourselves to the fact that this would be a decision based on political advantage. However, in this case our government did what it was supposed to do, and should always do.
The government analyzed the problems and issues, solicited comments, considered those comments carefully and made its decision based on how to make ICD-10 work best. I actually was inspired by reading the final rule and seeing how clearly they listened, considered and then applied the standards of workability and reason.
I can’t remember saying that about government any time in the last 20 years. This was not a politically based decision! That falls into the “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” category.
Now is the time for every segment of the healthcare industry to pull together – AMA, insurers, vendors, providers, hospitals, support organizations and everyone else involved – to make ICD-10 work for our industry and our country.
I’m in! And I am prouder to be an American today.
